Is
Coronary Disease Really Different in Women vs. Men?
Although men and women share many of the same major risk factors
for development of coronary artery disease, the similarities
stop there. The knowledgeable underwriter will recognize many
of the risk factors, signs, and symptoms of CAD in women that
would never raise a question in a man's application or testing.
This presentation will highlight the differences in risk factors,
clinical presentation, and mortality implication of coronary
artery disease in women versus men. The information presented
is medical evidence-based and referenced for those desiring
more information or review. |

What's
Old is New Again—Debits and Credits Are Better Than a Knock-out!
The foundation of underwriting is the debit/credit system.
Did you know you can create preferred guidelines and risk
classifications from a debit/credit foundation? Did you know
this method can stratify risk better than knock-out criteria?
There are pitfalls to be avoided and greater benefits to be
gained. This session will provide you the background on how
this all fits together. |

Cardiomyopathy:
The Good, the Bad…and the Insurable?
The wide spectrum of disease severity and the variable long
term outcomes of cardiomyopathies make these case histories
especially challenging for the underwriter. This session will
provide a broad overview of the types and etiologies of cardiomyopathies,
their clinical presentations, a review of standard diagnostic
testing, and an update of current treatment modalities. More
importantly, the speaker will define specific risk stratification
criteria in order to appropriately and fairly categorize cases
more, or less, favorably. |

The
Many Faces of PTSD
Traumatic events can be experienced in multiple settings,
in various degrees, and be responded to with a great deal
of variability by the victims. The trauma can be a one-time
event or a prolonged experience lasting years. Underwriting
this diagnosis requires understanding the source of the trauma,
the severity of the response, and the treatment. This session
will utilize case studies to review the clinical features,
functional consequences, effective treatments, and co-morbid
conditions to best evaluate underwriting risks. |

Case
Studies: Adult Survivors of Juvenile Illnesses
Several medical conditions that are present in childhood may
have lasting effects into adulthood. A condition like juvenile
cancer may present the underwriter with challenges many years
after the initial diagnosis and treatment. The presenters
will utilize a case study approach in exploring various childhood
diseases and the potential ongoing effects later in life.
Additional discussion will focus on how to evaluate these
conditions from an underwriting perspective along with new
and innovative approaches to treatment. |

Creating
a Culture to Drive Performance
Culture defines how an organization functions or dysfunctions.
Culture is the soul of an organization. The soul of an organization
is created by people with a clear set of values, core behaviors,
vision, shared beliefs, trust, and respect. Culture is not
the fluffy stuff—a fuzzy feeling or holding hands around
a campfire—it's more than that! It can be the glue that
binds an organization together for success and sustainable
growth or it can be the bad smell that sends people running
in different directions and on the wrong path. What do you
need to develop and nurture a culture that drives performance?
Blow away the fluff!! |

to become enlarged as well as the effects of other medical
conditions that might have adverse affects on an aneurysm.
Insights for interpreting imaging studies will also be offered.

doing 'more with less' and some ideas for using underwriting
metrics. The panelists will discuss work/life balance and
highlight a key piece of performance management that often
can be overlooked: developing people. Discover what works

published industry mortality data as well as other supplementary
literature. We will include discussion on the use of cardiovascular
biomarkers together to provide a better overall measurement
of cardiovascular risk. |

Early Stage Breast Cancer: A New Approach

temporary flat extra ratings. |

Update
on Childhood Neurological Conditions, Traumatic Brain Injury,
and Other Disorders
Underwriting children includes consideration of growth and
development factors. Impairments in children add to the complexity
of risk classification in a group with low anticipated levels
of both morbidity and mortality. Neurologic conditions are
especially challenging as diagnoses may be elusive, evolving,
or even overlap with other disorders. An underwriting approach
to common childhood neurologic conditions will be discussed
including autistic spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder, and seizure disorders. Traumatic brain injury and
ischemic strokes in children will also be covered. |

Death
by Prescription
Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drug fatalities
have overtaken traffic accidents as a cause of death in the
United States since 2009. The fatalities include all drug
deaths, but the increase was propelled largely by prescription
painkillers. Law enforcement and public health officials have
increased their efforts to reduce prescription drug misuse.
While there are early signs of progress, drug-related deaths
have continued to rise. In this presentation we will review
the potential impact of prescription drug abuse on the insurance
industry. |

such an enticing proposition. After attending this session,
you will appreciate the diversity of approaches and problems
that can be solved with predictive modeling. You will become

this creates for the underwriter. |
